Cherokee: The Gathering
Showcasing the flora and fauna of the territory that was once Cherokee land, (Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina), this painting features the symbols of the seven clans of the Cherokee. The largest clan was Wolf Clan, then there was Deer Clan, Bird Clan (symbolized in this painting by the Golden Eagle), Blue Clan (symbolized by the Blue Holly), Long Hair Clan (symbolized by the feathers which they may have used in their elaborate hair styles), and the Wild Potato Clan (symbolized by the wild potato flowers in the center of the holly). It was fascinating for me and my family to learn more about the Cherokee as I researched this painting, as my husband's family has roots there through his maternal side.
